Pupils at St Augustine’s High School were treated to a “flying visit” from best-selling American fantasy author Becca Fitzpatrick.

She called at the school on her current tour promoting the latest offering in her “Hush Hush” series about fallen angels.

Pupils from Our Lady and St John in Blackburn and St Christopher’s, Accrington, were also invited along to the talk.

Girls from Year 8 and Year 9 were given a personal insight by Becca into how she became an author, the challenges she faced in having her work published and some personal recollections that helped her to have the confidence to keep going.

After her talk, Becca answered questions from the floor before signing copies of her latest novel from the “Hush-Hush” series, “Finale.”

One Year 9 girl was very excited to meet Miss Fitzpatrick “I love reading this kind of book. I have read all the Twilight books and have just started the first book in this series, so to actually meet the author was amazing.”

This event follows on from the recent visit by Darren Shan who spoke to the boys about his experiences as a writer.

Headteacher Mr Michael Wright said: “We are always delighted to have visiting speakers in school, and this month we have been lucky to have two high profile authors to speak to the children.

“At St Augustine’s, we want to promote a love of reading and these visits introduce new genres to the pupils and encourage them to read for pleasure.”

This was the first time Miss Fitzpatrick had been outside of the USA and she was fascinated by the Lancashire accent.

Her tour will take her to London, Poland and France over the coming weeks.
