A well-known Ribble Valley man and woman have written and published a debut novel entitled “Because of Ruby”.
Co-author Sue Elvy, of Billington, had the idea for the story last year and asked her ex-husband, Steve Elvy, who lives in Whalley, for help with the project, as she knew he was already writing a novel of his own.
Sue and Steve have known each other since 1980 when they met in Luton, Bedfordshire, where Sue was brought up. They married in 1985 and, after numerous moves, settled in Whalley in 1992. They separated and divorced a few years later. However, they then remarried and stayed happy until their second divorce in 2000 (they say it was all down to the millennium bug!).
In spite of the on-off nature of their relationship, their 33-year closeness has been fundamental in their ability to find convincing plot lines and episodes for the 182-page novel, which is set in Luton during the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s.
“When Sue gave me the synopsis of the story, we agreed that it would be narrated by a woman and she would begin the story at the age of six,” said Steve.
“I struggled a bit with the words – the ‘voice’ – to use. But then it dawned on me. It was Sue’s voice, and it was the same voice that had been telling all about herself for all those years.”
The tagline for the novel is “Sometimes, life just happens”, which seems very appropriate knowing the authors’ backgrounds.
l “Because of Ruby: Sometimes, life just happens” is available from Amazon (£4.69) and £1.92 on Kindle.
