Newlyweds Gareth Hill and Karin Hilton had a surprise treat on their wedding day in Ireland when they met one of Gareth’s favourite musicians, Finbar Furey.
The couple, who live at Whalley, chose to tie the knot at Langton House Hotel, Kilkenny, in front of 54 of their nearest and dearest. Gareth had proposed to Karin at Kilkenny Castle on holiday the previous year.
Police sergeant Gareth (53), whose family is Irish, has been a fan since he was a teenager and had already chosen Furey’s popular piece “The Last Great Love Song” as a wedding song.
The words include:
“Welcome to my soul, I didn’t mean to scare you.
“I need to show it all, don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
When they arrived at the hotel, Gareth was amazed to discover that the singer, multi-instrumentalist and actor – a giant of Irish music – was performing the final date on his “The Last Great Love Song” tour in the hotel that night.
“Gareth was thrilled. He said it was as if it was meant to be,” said Karin (40), who owns Deep Beauty Spa in Mitton Road, Whalley.
The couple sneaked out of their wedding celebrations to meet Furey and have their picture taken with him.
Karin said: “Finbar chatted with us and signed a CD, and he invited us in to see his show, but we couldn’t really leave our wedding guests.”
