An outstanding array of young musical talent drawn from schools and colleges across Lancashire and Cumbria competed in the District Final of the Rotary Young Musician Competition 2014, held at Lancaster Girls’ Grammar School.
Representing schools from across the Ribble Valley, and sponsored by the Rotary Clubs of Clitheroe and Ribblesdale, were Ellen Buller (12), from Ribblesdale High School, Ben Fourie (15), from Clitheroe Royal Grammar School, and Karen Wilkinson, from St Augustine’s RC High School.
Ellen, who plays the flute, chose as her contest pieces “Study in B flat”, by Gariboldi, and “Allegro”, by Taffanel.
Ben, who plays the French horn, performed “Hunter’s Moon”, by Vinter, and “Send in the Clowns”, by Sondheim.
Following the break, Karen opened the vocal section with two songs, “Everything I Know”, by Lin-Manuel Miranda, and “The Little Spanish Town”, by P. Jenkyns.
All three of the Ribble Valley musicians gave outstanding performances in the competition and received positive feedback from the adjudicators.
They were unanimous in awarding second place in the Instrumental section to Ben, and first place in the Vocalist section to Karen.
Both Karen and Ben will go on to perform in the next stage of the prestigious competition at the Regional Final, at the Bolton School on Sunday, March 16th.
