CONSUMERS and traders in the Ribble Valley are being invited to have their say on shopping and the business environment as part of a borough-wide retail survey.

The employment, land and retail survey will paint an economic picture of the borough and help decision-makers understand how and when local retail facilities are being used. It is being undertaken by Ribble Valley Borough Council in conjunction with Lancashire County Developments Ltd – Lancashire County Council's economic development company.

Over the coming weeks, 900 residents will be asked in person or by phone about their shopping habits, such as where they buy food, clothes and footwear, household electrical items, books and CDs. They will also be asked what they do in their leisure time and where they access a wide range of goods and services, such as banking and health.

More than 150 high street businesses will also receive paper questionnaires asking how many people they employ, the type of facilities they use and their accommodation requirements for the future. The results of the survey will be used to guide and inform sustainable economic development in Ribble Valley.

Coun. Richard Sherras, chairman of the council's planning committee, said: "The survey will help us establish what actions we need to take to support the local economy and we are encouraging as many people as possible to take part."

County Councillor Niki Penney, hairman of LCDL, said: "It is vital that we gain an understanding of the economic climate in Ribble Valley, so that we can work in partnership with the borough council to support and enhance the local economy."

The survey is being undertaken by Warrington-based BE Group, a multi-disciplinary company incorporating regeneration, property and planning services.

If you would like to take part in the survey or make your views know, contact Ribble Valley Borough Council's forward planning officer, Phil Dagnall, on 01200 414570.
