WARTIME memories were brought to life at Oakhill College, Whalley, thanks to a visit from a special lady.
Pupils in Years 4 and 5 studying the Second World War received a visit from Mrs Johnson, great-grandmother of pupil Zofia Slater.
Mrs Johnson shared her wartime memories and spoke to the children about what it was like serving in the ATS and preparing meals for hundreds of soldiers when previously she had never cooked a meal for more than six people!
She also told the children what life was like in the air raid shelters, how food rationing affected daily diets and about the ultimate sacrifice of human life – in her case losing a brother and fiancé.
A school spokesman said: "As part of their approach to learning, pupils at Oakhill like where possible to bring their lessons off the page and therefore it was perfect for Mrs Johnson to come in and speak to them.
"The pupils asked many, many questions and shared with Mrs Johnson pictures from wartime books. Her visit again reminded everyone of how fortunate we are to be living in a nation at peace, albeit with wars still affecting the world."
