£70,000 repair bill for Whalley church
REPAIR work is being carried out at Whalley Parish Church.
The church has been covered with scaffolding as work has been undertaken to prevent rain getting in.
Every five years the popular church is inspected to ensure the building is in good repair and the 2005 report drew attention to several damp patches.
The repairs have cost £70,000 and churchwarden Mr Clifford Ball said the church has had to pay for these repairs as it is not eligible for grants for maintenance repairs.
Work includes repairs to the pointing to the tower, repairs to the dormer windows, repainting the clock face and specialist stonework repairs to the windows. The east window requires more work and a complete survey has been undertaken by architect ready for an application for grant aid to undertake these repairs.
The next inspection will be in 2010 and it is hoped that no further major repairs to the fabric will be required.
