Whalley claimed a hard-earned 14-run derby victory over Read, in a match reduced to 39 overs due to the heavy overnight rain.

Whalley won the toss and elected to bat.

Runs were hard to come by against the attack of Andrew Rushton (4-49) and Ravi Jangid(2-36), who bowled 17 overs each. Declan Bailey (30) held the innings together, before a quick fire 28 not out from Simon Gorton enabled Whalley to make 134-7.

Read’s reply was a similar story with progress slow against the bowling of Fergus Bailey, who took 4-25 off 15 overs.

Read’s plight was not helped by a leg injury to Ben Gorton just as he and Jangid(30) looked to accelerate. He was forced to retire 33 not out, and returned later in the innings with a runner but the overs ran out with Read 120 -7.

Whalley travel to face Settle on Saturday while Read are at Oswaldtwistle.
