Skipper’s upset at bowlout cup exit

Read skipper Kyle O’Connor has criticised the Ribblesdale Cricket League schedule following the club’s Ramsbottom Cup exit.

The 2011 finalists haven’t played a tie in the competition for two years, having been twice dumped out by virtue of a bowlout.

Last year the Whalley Road side suffered a 1-0 loss at home to to Euxton, and they endured a similar exit against Barnoldswick at the weekend after rain made play impossible.

O’Connor said: “Both teams were happy to come back this Sunday, but the League wouldn’t allow it. It’s very frustrating with there being no reserve dates. It’s disappointing but I’d take a bowl out loss over a coin toss. At least there’s some skill involved.

“But that’s two years now that we haven’t been able to play a Ramsbottom Cup match. What’s the point in that?”

There was better news for reigning champions Ribblesdale Wanderers, who struck twice in the bowlout to beat Great Harwood at The Cliffe.

Clitheroe beat Whalley 2-0 in a bowlout, while Salesbury lost 1-0 to Brooksbottom after rain had wreaked havoc at Ribchester Road.

• Ribblesdale League fixtures for Saturday: Barnoldswick v Euxton; Baxenden v Ribblesdale Wanderers; Brooksbottom v Clitheroe; Cherry Tree v Settle; Great Harwood v Edenfield; Oswaldtwistle v Padiham; Read v Brinscall; Salesbury v Earby.
