Stonyhurst celebrate finals hat-trick!

THREE Stonyhurst rugby teams are through to the Lancashire Cup Finals.

The Under 14s and Under 16s both won their semi-finals against Manchester Grammar and Kirkham respectively on January 18th, and the Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall first XV are also through.

If the Under 15s win their semi-final on February 8th, also against Kirkham, Stonyhurst will have a record-breaking four teams in the Lancashire Cup Finals this year!

Mr Charles, the Director of Sport at Stonyhurst, said: “We are absolutely delighted with the development of our Under 16 and Under 14 rugby teams this season, and the fact they have both won through to the final of the Lancashire County Cup is just reward for all their hard work and commitment.

“The Under 15 team also shows real promise.

“It is great to see so many young players achieving such a high standard and very obviously enjoying the experience.”

The Under 14s beat Manchester Grammar 12-7, showing tremendous will and commitment throughout their match.

The Under 16s’ semi-final was hard-fought at Kirkham on a heavy pitch, with both teams trying almost too hard, and Kirkham taking an early lead.

The second half saw immediate improvement in the quality of play from both sides.

As the minutes ticked away, everyone threw their all into the game but were unable to breach the others’ defence.

In the last play, Stonyhurst secured a hard-fought 12-3 win to secure their place in the final.

The finals will be played on March 25th at Southport RFC.
