Waddington student gears up for bike ride...

A WADDINGTON student is gearing up for a strenuous 200-mile bike ride from London to Paris.

Anna Carey, who attends the University of Warwick, will attempt to travel between the two capitals over a three-day period with the hope of raising £1,000 for the innovative organisation Practical Action.

The organisation has the simple yet effective mission statement of wanting to create a world free of poverty and injustice in which technology is used to benefit all.

“With two billion people still living in poverty Practical Action’s aim is an ambitious yet admirable one,” said Anna, an admittedly inexperienced cyclist. “Striving for greater equity, wellbeing and technological justice are values which are hard to disagree with.

“At both the background and foreground of Practical Action is the philosophy of the economist Fritz Schumacher (who founded the organisation) who believed that the gift of knowledge sets people free. As a Politics, Philosophy and Economics student, having such a practical yet eloquent and philosophical core to the charity makes it both unique and appealing to me.”
