Abacus A so close to upset

IN the Times Cup, Second Division Abacus A put in a valiant effort against First Division Clitheroe A.

Forced to play with a lady short, they put up a good fight and were only just defeated by the senior side when the handicap was added 339 - 364.

The Second Division’s two high flying teams were involved in a close encounter when third placed St Nicholas finished only eight aces behind against table leaders Blackburn Seniors B.

As they well expected they were able to clinch a handicap of 61 which was added to the final scores and gave them a 363 - 310 victory. St Philip’s, struggling near the foot of the First Division, were only able to claim a slender lead against mid-table Halsteads from the Second Division, but with the handicap added found themselves on the wrong side of a 329 – 386 result.

In the Smith Cup, up-and-coming Goodshaw from the third division, although winning on the night, went down against lowly Telecom B from the same division once the handicap was added.

Blackburn Harpoons, who have dominated the Third Division for most of the season, dropped only one mixed doubles game and easily outplayed Roefield B, and without the handicap to the opposition came away 373 - 336 victors.

Blackburn Seniors C, sitting second bottom in the Second Division, were completely outplayed at Darwen Vale when St Matthew’s from the league below took early control of the match and never allowed their visitors to get themselves established on the night.

In the Third Division, in a match played at Oakhill College, Clitheroe C improved their standards when they entertained Goodshaw from Rossendale.

Goodshaw, who are new to the league this year, set about improving their position in the table by securing a 12 - 6 victory as a result of proving much the stronger side in the level doubles. The result moved them up to third place in the table. T

The following night Roefield B regained their third place as a result of a huge victory over Blackburn Seniors D in a match which saw them run out 17 - 1 victors.
