The Fourball pairing of Gareth Sutcliffe and Mark Hargreaves notched up another win in the Clitheroe Golf Club Pro Shop Winter Series to increase their lead to an unassailable 39 points.
The pair have set a hot pace from the outset with three outright wins, three second places and a fourth to amass 64 points, and with only two weekends of Winter League Golf remaining, are sure of a top table finish.
Gareth Sutcliffe is also involved in a close fight for the Pro Shop Winter Singles Series title. He is currently second behind Chris Heslop, who picked up a useful five points on Sunday to stretch his lead to seven points.
• Mytton Fold Golf Club opened their season in a relaxed way when they kicked off with a Texas Scramble on a very un-Texas like wet Sunday morning. This failed to dampen spirits, especially one team who chose to play off the white tees in this yellow-tee competition.
Conditions became increasingly moist as the morning progressed into the afternoon, and greens became somewhat puddled - much like some of the players!
Greeted by hot soup and a roll, the competitors collected at the 19th hole where Richard Greaves, Frank Hindle and Dave Bolton were hailed as winners with a nett score of 54.78.
Just behind were Mr Captain Mick Bryan, Dave Westwood and Brad Hodgeson with a nett 55.55. Third, and just beaten on a card playoff, were Captain-Elect Nick Avino, Richard Palmer and Gordon Lucas.
Saturday saw the final round of the Winter Singles, and with four players in with a chance to win the men’s Order of Merit it was always going to be a close run thing; and so it turned out.
Order of Merit leader Gary Aldred was taken ill on the course and sadly had to retire. With Dave Clegg just out of the points it was left to Steve Worrall and John Berry to slug it out.
Steve held on to his slight lead on the day and took the win (carding 36 points over 16 holes) with John finishing second, some two points in arrears.
Eddie Scott (34 points) took third, just losing out on a card playoff, and fourth placed Dave Griffith finished just ahead of Chris Chadwick, again on count back, both having scored 32 points.
With just two twos on the day, Tony Wilson (at the first) and Dave Griffith (at the 8th) split the Twos Pot.
And so to the Orders of Merit. In the ladies’ section it was a runaway win for Brenda Griffith.
In the men’s section Steve Worrall just held off John Berry, Gary Aldred and Dave Clegg to take the title.
• Ladies from Stonyhurst Park Golf Club won at home in the 2nd round of the Mail on Sunday competition against Mytton Fold Golf Club.
The team made up of Linda Ashworth, Janette Dowdy, Joyce Kenyon, Jean Alcock and Margaret Carrington went on to win with a score of 4 ½ to ½ . The weather stayed fine for the game luckilly, which wasn’t the same on the Sunday for Jean and Janette when they played in the Daily Mail competition at Mytton Fold. After a busy weekend and in very cold conditions they managed to win 2 and 1.
