Two finals in a month for Clitheroe’s Chris

Clitheroe Golf Club’s Chris Stokes has enjoyed a highly successful month by reaching the finals of two of the north of England’s most prestigious tournaments.

At the Hesketh Golf Club she won her place in the final of the Lancashire County Senior Ladies’Golf Association Championship with a dramatic 19th hole win.

In the final, played in extremely wet and difficult conditions, she lost out to Chris Appleby on the last hole.

Chris’ second final appearance came in the Northern Counties Veteran Ladies’ Golf Association Northern Championship at Ulverston Golf Club.

Having qualified as one of the 16 best scores in the stroke play stages, she fought her way through the next three match-play rounds before losing to the former England Senior Ladies’ champion Sue Dye in the final.

Caroline Cherry returned the best score in the Ladies’ Two Division Stableford competition with 38 points to win the Division 2 prize. The Division 1 winner was Janet Bailey with 30 points.

Rosemary Fort won the Past Lady Captain’s Salver & EWGA Medal with a score of 111-35-76 after a card play-off with Tracey Bentley (82-06-76) and Caroline Cherry. A 9 hole Stableford competition was won by Elizabeth McEwan with 17 points.

Geoffrey Duxbury won the Midweek Medal and Tradesman’s Trophy Qualifier with 77-8-69. Runner-up was Chris Silverwood (82-11-71).

The annual Company Golf Day at Clitheroe succeeded in attracting 30 teams sponsored by local companies. Kieron Hunt led his Whitehead and Wood team of Nigel Clowes, M. Rogers and D. Irving to victory with 81 points closely followed by the Cinch Plain outfit of T. Bentley, S. Ackers, G. Byrne and M. Young on 80 points. Other prizes went to Mark Ashworth, David Lawson, Mark Young and P. Thompson (nearest the pin) and the longest drive competition was won by Simon Swindells for the men and Donna Cooper-Holmes for the ladies.

First place in Saturday’s Jubilee Plate competition went to Stephen Young with a score of 76-7-69.

Clitheroe Golf Club’s Seniors Team have had a busy week with two matches played on consecutive days over the Clitheroe golf course. On Tuesday (May 26th) the opponents, Fairhaven Golf Club, were defeated by 9pts to 3pts and the following day the home team completed the double over local rivals Pleasington Golf Club with an 8 pts to 4pts win.
