THE hardy golfers of Mytton Fold Golf Club braved gale force winds on their post-Christmas social competition – and they went out armed with just three clubs!
The shotgun start was drowned out by the high winds as the excellent entry fought to stay upright on the more exposed tees and greens.
The annual three-club competition is always well supported and never fails to surprise the results team with the excellent scores returned.
A putter was mandatory as summer greens were used, leaving the key selection of weapons to just two clubs!
This year was no exception as two players returned 36 points over the 16 holes played. Chris Quinn, playing with a 7 wood, 8 iron and putter claimed his first competition win at Mytton Fold when he beat Frank Havard (4 rescue, 9 iron and putter) on a card playoff.
Jim Bridge (3 wood, 7 iron and putter) took third spot with 33 points and club secretary Dave Clegg (4 rescue, 8 iron and putter) came home fourth.
First lady home was past lady captain Jean Havard (3 wood, 8 iron and putter) with 26 points, beating Linda Clegg (5 wood, 8 iron and putter) into second spot on a card playoff. Linda’s eldest daughter, Abbie, came in third with 22 points.
Junior winner was Kyle Furlong (3 wood, 9 iron and putter) with 32 points.
In the previous weekend’s Winter League and Winter Pairs competitions the duo of Dave Clegg and past captain John Berry had everything sewn up. Playing in both competitions, Dave Clegg took the singles win with 39 points beating his pairs partner, John, by two clear points.
Garry Davies took third spot, just losing out on second by way of a card playoff.
With their excellent scores in the singles, it was no surprise to see that Clegg and Berry took the pairs with 44 points. Ian Thomson and John Whittaker came in second with 42 points, and Jean Van Boeckel and Steve Rusyn (40 points) third. Jean Van Boeckel added to his Christmas pot when he birdied the first.
