Last Saturday saw members of Whalley Golf Club compete in the highlight of the year, Captain’s Day.
The prestigious competition was held in glorious conditions, providing captain Bill Banks with a superb day.
The weather did not provide easy scoring conditions though, thanks to the carefully-placed pin positions and firm greens.
The spoils went to Gary Meakin with an impressive 78-8-70, second on a card play-off was Miles Wade (74-3-71), and third John Harvey (96-25-71). The best gross prize went to Rob Andrew’s 75, and the veterans’ prize went to John Eastwood.
Nearest the pin on the 18th was Roger Lee, nearest the 8th hole in two was Jeremy Wade, the best front nine score went to Neil Pollard, and the best back nine to Ian Conroy.
The annual Ladies’ Open competition sponsored by Maureen Cooksons took place last Thursday. The morning competitors were severely tested by the wet weather, but Kath James of Whalley and C. Gorton and J. Musker of Stonyhurst won for the second year running with 72 points.
Second were Shirley Palich and Carol Blackadder of Whalley and D. Dawson of Great Harwood with 70 points. Joyce Andrew, Lesley Lohou and Janet Taylor (Whalley) were third with 66 points.
