Steve beats wet and windy conditions to earn two-shot win at Mytton Fold

Saturday’s Lady Captain’s Day at Mytton Fold Golf Club started with wet and windy conditions after very heavy overnight rain.

Early players suffered the most with the bad weather as it started to clear for those with later tee times.

Steve Cunliffe scored an excellent 40 points in such poor conditions, with man in form Keith Fitzhenry just two points behind.

Chris Chadwick finished third with 37 points, just beating Garry Davies (Division One winner) on a card play-off.

Nigel Fairhurst (36 points) came home in fifth, Tony (Rory) Cross (35 points) sixth and Brad Hodgeson (35 points) seventh and the winner of Division Two.

In the ladies section it was a win for Brenda Griffith (31 points) with Past Lady Captain Carole Maher second and Lady Captain Elect Tarja Wilson third.

With only one ‘two’ on the day, Ray Standring (at the 18th) was laughing all the way to the bank!

Spot prizes went to John Kwasniewski and Brenda Griffith for their ‘nearest the pin’ at the ninth and 18th respectively.

The Clitheroe Golf Club Seniors Team continued their strong start to the 2015 Ribble Valley Seniors’ Golf League programme with an emphatic 5-1 home win against Ashton and Lea Golf Club on Tuesday.

Despite the lead pair of Seniors captain Richard Crossley and Peter Hargreaves losing by the narrowest of margins to the last putt on the final green, the remaining team members rallied strongly and ran out winners in each of the other five matches.

The individual results were: Richard Crossley and Peter Hargreaves lost one down; David Johnson and Phil Walmsley won 1 up; Frank Potter and Jeff Crowther won 2 and 1; Peter Hensman and Steve Law won 5 and 4; Neil Fawcett and Brian Stokes won 2 and 1, and Ken Ward and Ian Lambert won 3 & 2.

The team remains undefeated in its first four matches with three wins and one draw.

It was the Spring Trophy on Saturday at Whalley, and the course played very well with the afternoon players getting the best of the weather.

Jeremy “Putter” Wade took the trophy with a nett 70, just pipping Craig “Ticky” Taylor, who posted a nett 71, which won him first prize in Division One.

Second place in the Division went to the on form James Kennerley with nett 73 with third place going to Bill Banks’ nett 74.

Division Two second place went to Roy Ellis nett 72, third was Kevin Walker, nett 73.

No two’s on the day – this will be rolled over to the next singles competition.

Last Thursday, Whalley Ladies played the L.L.C.G.A. Scott Leggatt Foursome Qualifier, and the winners , with 37 points, were Jean Sanderson and Maureen Board.

The three couples who will go forward to the next round at Great Lever and Farnworth G.C. on Monday, June 1st are Anne Prior and Wendy Green, Karen Thompson and Margaret Calvert, and Bridget Rees and Joyce Andrew .

The second qualifying round of the Longworth Cup at Whalley was won by Viv Lee with 105-31-74.
