Sweltering conditions brought a halt to Samantha Murray’s medal bid in the Modern Pentathlon World Cup 1 in Acapulco, Mexico on Friday.
The women’s final was cancelled after two disciplines, and a Union Internationale de Pentathlon Modern statement said: “Due to sweltering conditions in Acapulco, and with the health of the athletes and the horses a high priority for UIPM, the decision has been taken to end the Women’s Final at World Cup 1 early.
“UIPM President Dr Klaus Schormann stated, “It is vital to protect the health of both athletes and horses, and with the conditions making it impossible to guarantee this, and with the athletes also voicing their concern, we had to end the competition.
“It is highly unfortunate but we want to guarantee safety for everyone.”
The points of the next three World Cup Series event in Egypt, China and Hungary will now count towards qualification to the World Cup Final in Sarasota-Bradenton, USA.
