Oliver Murray - younger brother of Olympic silver medallist Samantha - is himself a national champion after winning the British Modern Tetrathlon Championships in Solihull.

Oliver, and Hannah Procter, from the Ribble Valley Modern Pentathlon team, travelled to the championships, which comprised of a static shoot, swim, fencing competition and a combined run/shoot over a single action-packed day.

Both were competing in the Youth C category for competitors born in 1999 or 2000.

Oliver, aged 14 and a pupil at Bowland High School, started with a solid performance in the shoot of 74, out of possible 100.

And he followed that up with a good 100m freestyle swim of 1:03.04 to leave him fourth heading into the fencing competition.

Oliver showed how much his fencing has progressed to win 29 out of 36 bouts to take the overall lead before the combined run/shoot event.

He comfortably held on to his lead with a strong run to become national champion!

For Hannah, aged 12 and a pupil at CRGS, this was her first ever tetrathlon, and first fencing competition, having been inspired to take up the sport by Samantha Murray last autumn when Samantha - who started swimming with Clitheroe Dolphins - went back to Dolphins to help insire a new generation of athletes.

Hannah started with a very strong shoot of 83 to lie in joint third, and swam well to finish in ninth in a time of 1:09.46 to leave her fifth overall.

She fenced well against more experienced opposition to win 11 out of 27 bouts, and then ran well to finish in 12th place overall.

The Ribble Valley Modern Pentathlon Team are keen to encourage more people to take up the sport by trying their hands at shooting and fencing.

Both are available locally, with a fencing club being held at the Tennis Centre on Edisford Road, Clitheroe every Wednesday evening from 7-30 to 9-30 p.m.

The club caters for all standards, from beginners upwards, and for more details, contact Debs Murray via debs@debsmurray.co.uk

The shooting is 10m air pistol and is also available in Clitheroe next to Ribblesdale Pool every Friday evening from 7-30 to 8-30 p.m.

Oliver and Hannah both train at Clitheroe Dolphins swim club, and there is a good choice of running clubs in the area as well.
