Local course tests elite racers to limit

CYCLING Development North West League runner-up Alistair Rutherford brought the series to a close last Sunday with victory in the 17th final round at the Bashall Eaves circuit.

The 30-year-old Science in Sport.com rider from Manchester is pictured at the finish line after sprinting away from Richard Bott (Herbalife-Wheelbase).

The punishing course saw riders fall off the pace before they were halfway up the hill, and a high-speed descent further split the field - with only 20 of the 48 elite race starters finishing.

Rutherford and Bott were 45 seconds ahead of third-placed Richard Hepworth (Cycle Premier-Metaltek).

In the supporting 3/4 category race Birkenhead North End’s Mike Garner won a bunch sprint finish from Jonathan Stanlake (unattached).
