The new captain of Stonyhurst Park Golf Club made a good start to his year in office on Saturday when his team took the main prizes at the inaugural competition.

John Hodkinson paid tribute to his teammates, Janice Bufton, Steve Bufton and John Simpson who had all contributed to their winning score.

All members of the team were delighted with their prizes although John was somewhat embarrassed at having to present the winner’s prize to himself!

John thanked the groundstaff who had managed to transform the course in the last week after a long winter period, and to Ian McDonnell the new Competitions Secretary who had arranged the day.

• The final Pro Shop Winter Series Fourball Betterball Competition at Clitheroe Golf Club was won by Mark Ashworth and Granville Pilling with 46 points, two points ahead of Tim Clarke and Miles Corish.

Terry Bithell and Jack Simmons were third with 43 points, one point better than the overall Winter Series Champions Mark Hargreaves and Gareth Sutcliffe.

Sunday’s Singles Stableford went to Tim Fagan with 41 points, closely followed by Andrew Blockeel on 40 points.

There was a four-way tie for third place on 38 points with Dave Irving winning the card play-off against Julian Troup, Richard Pickup and Neil Cronin.

• It was the Whalley Nine Hole Open on Saturday and this well supported event didn’t let anyone down.

On probably the best day of the year for golf so far, and with the course looking in great shape, N. Jefferson came top of the pile with 22 points.

Second place went to T. Moore, again with 22 points, beaten on a card play-off, with third place going to T. Thornber’s 20 points.

All vouchers are in the golf shop with Jamie Hunt, ready for all the winners to pick up.
