Clitheroe Junior Rugby Club’s newly formed Under 11s squad travelled to Rossendale on Sunday to play their first-ever competitive match.
Unsurprisingly the Clitheroe kids took some time to adjust to the pace and physicality of contact rugby, however a strong second half performance saw the Maroon and Gold’s draw level with the home team with five tries each in a highly competitive encounter between two very evenly-matched teams.
Clitheroe try scorers were Leo Valinakis, Jonny Wardle, Dominic Grayson, Ethan Rogers and Roger Stansfield.
Looking to attack from all areas of the field, Clitheroe particularly impressed with their strong running with ball in hand, led by man of the match Valinakis, along with powerful and effective tackling in defence.
For such an inexperienced team, this was a hugely impressive performance.
The Under 11s, comprising Year 5 and 6 boys, are always happy to welcome new players to training as they build towards having full age group squads at both Under 10s and 11s.
Training is at Clitheroe Rugby Club, Littlemoor Road, on Sundays from 10-15 to 11-45 a.m.
