Mytton Fold Golf Club’s President, David Hargreaves, had to pay up when he came out second-best in the club’s end of season President versus Captain competition.

With the two protagonists taking it in turns to select their team members and nominate two jokers, the scene was set for another nail-biting contest.

Captain Gordon Lucas was looking to end the President’s winning streak over a number of years as Sunday produced one of the best days for golf seen this season. Played in a stableford format, with a shotgun start, the competition always builds to a close finish.

With maths teacher and captain-elect Phil Hammond recording the scores as competitors returned their cards to an increasingly packed 19th hole, the relative totals of captain and president ebbed and flowed to the ooos and aaahs of the competitors.

With just two scores – those of husband and wife Dave and Brenda Griffith, on opposing teams - still to be returned Mr Captain led by 12 points. Griffith domestic harmony dictated that their equal scores of 22 points put Mr Captain in the driving seat as the jokers were revealed.

Mr President’s jokers Mick Mahon and Steve Brooks added another 59 points to his total, but Mr Captain played a blinder, having selected Mick Walsh and overall competition winner, Baz Hargreaves, to add 62 points and take an emphatic win.

Baz Hargreaves’s 35 points gave him the outright win just one point ahead of a three-way fight for second. Here Steve Worrall just pipped Nigel Fairhurst and Steve Gordon for the minor places.

In the ladies’ section it was a win for lady captain Patricia Leyland (30 points) ahead of Judith Kay (29 points) and lady captain-elect Doreen Hammond (28 points).

There were seven twos when Tony Wilson, Steve Brooks, Wayne Andrews, Peter Kiddie, Gary Ashton and John Hammond all birdied the first hole. Odd man out, John Welch, waited until the final hole before cashing in.

Mytton Fold’s ladies had their away day at home this autumn! Plagued by bad weather and postponed competitions, the end of year schedule was so compressed that it was decided to combine their away day with their end of season get-together at the Mytton Fold golf course.

True to form, their day was foreshortened by rain and hailstone, and the competition was reduced to just eleven holes. Allison Nuttall took the win, followed by Patricia Leyland, Hazel Sellars and Jean Sanderson. Judith Kay took the best front-nine prize.

Entry forms for the various winter singles/doubles and mixed doubles competitions are now on the notice boards. Winter competitions start this coming weekend – get your boots on!

A reminder to all members that Mytton Fold Golf Club’s Annual General Meeting is to be held on Thursday, November 1st at 7-30 p.m.

• TURKEY and Pheasant Plucker, Butcher Alan Hacking sponsored Clitheroe Golf Clubs Turkey Shoot.

Keith Allen and Stuart Nunn won the big birds with 44 points.

Nunn set the pace with a birdie on the first but Allen came good on the back nine to ensure a winning total.

Five birdies for the Speak/Drinkwater Team including twos on the 8th and 14th resulted in an almost flawless round for a prize much better than pork scratchings with 43 points.

Graeme Edmondson’s four-pointer on the 15th and three pars to finish gave the Traynor/Edmondson Partnership third prize ahead of George William Farnworth and Michael Gibson after cards on the same 42 points.

Young Louis Barrett was a perfect foil for Alastair of the same family and they combined well to score 41 for a meaty reward.

Gary Clarkson had a steady front nine in Sundays Single Stableford and then Bang. An eagle two on the par four 10th for five points set him up for a winning 38-point total to take the Division Two Prize.

Graeme Edmondson sealed a profitable Weekend with a 37-point score thanks to a powerful finish to take second place and Trevor Hatch who faded on the run in, hung on for third place with 35.

Ian Battersby got the better of a countback with Richard Walsham on the same mark just off the Leader Board.

Mike Tattersall dropped a shot on the notorious 17th and it proved costly as Alan Gillespie took the Division One Prize with the same 36-point total after cards.

Robert Bennie slipped on the turn but came back well to push Tim Stanley off the Podium after cards with the same 35 points.

The ladies returned to find the going heavy for the Team of Four Competition on Thursday but the Maureen Micklewright, Pat Rees, Cath Podevyn and Jean Holt Team showed their stamina with a winning 85-point score.

The Michelle Fielding, Marilyn Fletcher, Marie Finney, Kath Lobell quartet would be disappointed to find they were just two points off the top but had to settle for the runners up spot.

One of our Team was missing said Judy Wooley but didn’t she Jan Walsh and Elaine Grinrod do well to take third prize with 80.

Cheryl Burke,Barbara Thornton and Nancy Mortimer shared the twos pot.

George Young won the sixth round of the Juniors Autumn Championship Series with a solid 81-8-73 round and Louis Barrett had one shot less than Hayden Moorcroft for second place.

Tom Forrest returned the Best Gross and had the only two on the day at the 5th.
