For the second year in succession, a “duffer” beat the champions in Mytton Fold Golf Club’s Champion of Champions and Duffers Cup competition.
Players who have finished first or second in this season’s competitions vie for the mantel of Champion of Champions, while the rest squabble for the Duffer’s Cup.
This very popular late-season event was played in atypical steamy September conditions and brought out the best golf in the big field. Danny Glover’s 91-26=65 was an outstanding score to take both the Duffer’s Cup and best nett score of the day.
Just one shot behind came Patrick Ashworth (91-26-66) and, having previously won the Pharman Cup, took the honour of being this year’s Champion of Champions.
Ray Standring (77-8-69) took the final podium position some three shots in arrears, beating Division One winner Wayne Ivinson on a card play-off. Wayne’s 74 was the lowest gross of the day and his best ever gross score. Scott Stanworth took Division Two with an excellent 93-23-70.
The twos pot was a four-way split, with Phil Hammond and Danny Glover birdying the first, whilst Wayne Ivinson and John Parkinson birdied the ninth.
Mytton Fold’s ladies went to Knot End for their Autumn Away Day. In beautiful playing conditions Joanne Allen won with 31 points and was followed in a three-way tie for second place by Jean Sanderson, Maureen Board and Allison Nuttall.
The North West Seniors League closed its season with its President’s Day competition and dinner, held at Mytton Fold.
Outgoing President, and Mytton Fold Golf Club member, John Hammond, together with the home team’s seniors captain, Gordon Lucas, put on a special show in beautiful weather conditions.
The team competition was won, fittingly, by the home team with league champions Hurlston Hall taking the runners-up slot.
