CLITHEROE fell to a 24-9 defeat against a determined Newton-le-Willows side.

Clitheroe expected the home side to attack strongly from the outset and they were not disappointed. Newton threw the ball round with confidence, using their strong running inside backs to good effect and after only 10 minutes they were 5-0 up.

On the 20 minute mark Newton transgressed within kicking range of full back Martin Lafranceschina, who was on target for the three pointer.

At the start of the second half Clitheroe were another try in arrears as Newton’s speedy outside backs did the damage before they scored again five minutes later.

Two more penalties was all Clitheroe managed for their efforts as Newton ran one further try in to conclude an afternoon of mixed emotions.

This Saturday, Clitheroe host Liverpool side Mossley Hill at Littlemoor, kick-off 3 p.m.
