CLITHEROE golf starlet Sophie Lamb has added yet another trophy to her abounding cabinet.
There seems to be no limit to the 14 year old’s burgeoning talent as the Westholme pupil fought off competition from some of the world’s hottest prospects to triumph in the US Kids International Golf Tournament held in East Lothian, Scotland.
The masterly teenager, who recently qualified for the match play stages of the County Championships at Manchester Golf Club, dominated Europe’s premier junior event throughout and entered the final round one stroke ahead of her nearest competitor, Gabriella Coella from Venezuela, and three ahead of Hannah Henderson from Ireland.
The leading three all played together in the last group. The final round was played in difficult wind and rain but Sophie played great golf to eventually win by six shots. She was the only player on the final day to break par and this was helped with an eagle, birdie, birdie burst midway through the back nine which pulled her away from the rest.
The Westholme pupil, who has principal Mrs Lillian Croston as one of her biggest supporters, is showing rapid progress and development as a player and has now reduced her handicap to four.
She got her first handicap of 45 just more than three years ago.
Sophie’s proud dad, Phil, said: “Players came from all over the world to compete. In Sophie’s group there were also players from Germany, France, Austria, South Africa, Morocco, the Czech Republic and England. I think in all 35 different countries were represented.”
He added: “Her grandparents came up to support her during the week and her cousin Joey Lamb played in the boys 15-18 group and he won that so it was a great family week.”
