EVER-IMPROVING Clitheroe golf starlet Sophie Lamb has won the Under-14s trophy in the Northern Girls’ Championship at Durham City GC.
The 13-year-old was presented with the silverware by the Liverpool Society of Lady Past Captains’ after firing rounds of 78 and 77 on the par 73 course for a total of 155. The youngster won by two shots from Olivia Jackson from Yorkshire who had a two round total of 157. Both girls are part of the English Girls Birdie squad.
The Northern Girls is a major tournament organised by The EWGA (English Womens Golf Association) and is entered by the leading girl golfers from the six Northern Regions including Lancashire, Yorkshire, Cumbria, Cheshire, Durham and Northumberland, making this Sophie’s best win to date in her short but blossoming career.
The youngster impressed throughout the competition but at the 10th was unlucky to go over the green and out of bounds. She also found trouble at the 11th, but hit back strongly to play the final seven holes in two under par to take the trophy.
Sophie has now come down to seven handicap and hopes to drop again by the end of the season
Her dad Phil Lamb said: “Sophie played fantastic golf all day and to finish the way she did in such an important tournament made me very proud of her.”
