Away day proves a big success

Forty members of Whalley Golf Club took part in captain Howard Walmsley’s away day at Northcliffe Golf Club, Shipley.

The prize winners were - Morning Nine-Hole Better Ball Competition: Edward Geirat and Steve Powell (26 points); Afternoon 18-Hole Four-Man Team Competition: John Rostron, Ken Bolton, George Blenkinship and John Kearsley (77 points).

Whalley hosted the Len Rowbottom Trophy on Saturday, as John Jobes came out on top with a classy 41 points, winning by three from David Hanson, who was second in Division One, third place going to Paul Wray with 37.

Division Two went to John Hamilton (37 points), with Tony Walker (35) pipping new captain-elect Richard Ferley on a card play-off.

There were three twos for Gary Meakin, Neil Pollard and Aaron Ripley, who beat Dan Rodgers on the 18th in a greatly contested singles knockout final.

On Thursday, Whalley ladies braved the appalling conditions to compete in the Veterans’ Trophy over 13 holes and a Medal round .

The winner of the Veterans’ Trophy was Margaret Calvert with 68-17-51 ; Karen Thompson came second with 67-14-53 and in third place was Maggie Harvey with 71-16-55.

Joan Whittaker won the 18 hole competition with 93-17-76.
