Ramsbottom Cup holders Ribblesdale Wanderers moved one step closer to retaining their trophy after beating Brinscall with two wickets to spare in a tight game.

Liam Winstanley was the mainstay of Brinscall’s 182 in 49.2 overs with 52 as Ribblesdale’s Ian Britcliffe took four wickets for just 27 runs from his eight overs.

Ben Dougall quickly set about the home attack from the off making a quick-fire 26 while Charlie Jackson (46) dropped anchor in stabilising Wanderer’s innings before the holders edged through with 4.2 overs to spare. The pair were ably supported by John Rain (25), Mick Clarkson (31) and Ric Clarkson who finished 19 not out.

Clitheroe suffered a first defeat of the season as Padiham ended the Chatburn Road side’s ambition of a Houldsworth Ribblesdale and Ramsbottom Cup double.

Brian Clegg struck the winning runs to give third bottom Padiham a surprise two- wicket win and a place in the semi-finals alongside Ribblesdale and Cherry Tree.

The senior division leaders set their Arbories hosts a target of 219 after being dismissed for 218 in 48.4 overs with Paul Gaskell (45) top scoring. South African Darryl Losper led the run chase with 54 before Clegg hit a final two for victory.

Stephen Booth (2-26-0-10) and Joshua Marquet (2-27-3-10) were the pick of Clitheroe’s bowlers.
