MICK Mahon massacred the Mytton Fold Golf Club field on Saturday when he ran away with a masterful win, finishing six shots ahead of his nearest rival.
Playing off a winter handicap of 20, and over the shortened 16-hole course, his nett 48 put him well clear of second-placed Chris Hughes (70-16-54), who beat Gary Ashton (67-13-54) on a card play-off.
Another great performance came from Hazel Sellars, whose 91-36-55 made her top lady and fourth overall, beating Richard Greaves (79-24-55) on a card play-off.
Hazel’s nett 55 put her six shots clear of Judith Kay, whilst Jean Havard finished third in the ladies’ section.
There were just two twos, with the pot split between Richard Greaves (at the first) and John Parkinson (at the 11th).
In the Winter Pairs it was a win for Tony Wilson and Frank Havard with 37 points, just one point ahead of singleton Mahon, whose partner, Dave Westwood, was unavailable.
Wayne Ivinson and John Welch finished third with 34 points in their debut match of the season.
• THE ladies at Clitheroe Golf Club could not resist the temptation to turn out in force for the Alan Hacking-sponsored Turkey Shoot.
And Ian Buttle will be delighted that Diane will bring home the turkey after topping the leader board.
In the previous week’s nine-hole Give and Take Stableford, Susan Gibson won with an impressive 19 points, leaving Di Buttle, Trudy Walne and Susan Healey to dispute the minor placings.
But Di reversed the placings with Susan for the Big Bird Trophy.
Mary Thompson had the edge over Doreen Bolton and Jan Walsh after cards for third prize, and should be suitably rewarded with a fowl prize.
Geoff Fielding has been competing for the Past Captains’ and President’s Cup for nigh-on 20 years and he was delighted to take the Ashheton Cup home by overcoming testing conditions and outscoring competitors of the calibre of Denis Greenup and Richard Read to achieve his goal.
Congratulations to Geoff as he did the double with further success in last week’s nine-hole Stableford prior to dinner and the meeting to choose next year’s captain-elect, Simon Raine.
