Mickey is the star of the show in awful conditions at Mytton
MICKEY Walsh was the star of the show as Mytton Fold’s golfers played in what were probably the toughest competition conditions of the year over the weekend.
Using his trusted Slippery Frog chipper to amazing effect, Mick carded an impressive 35 points over the Langho’s 16-hole winter course.
Giving Mick a run for his money was Steve Worrall who came in second, just one point in arrears.
Joining the money list once again was the in-form Kevin Shanley, whose 33 points just shaded pond-bouncing Bob Devine into fourth place following a card playoff.
Playing in both the Singles and as a team in the Winter Pairs competition, past captain John Berry and secretary Dave Clegg were equally matched with 32 points, but John’s better back seven scores earned him fifth place.
There were some exceptional golf shots to take shares from the twos pot.
Given the rock-hard ground most players found putting more a game of chance, but this did not stop Luke Chadwick from birdying the 18th, Steve Worrall from eagling the 17th and Jean Van Boeckel from eagling the 317-yard, stroke index 2, 14th hole.
Tarja Wilson (29 points) won the Ladies’ singles section for the second successive week, just beating lady captain-elect Doreen Hammond on a card play-off.
In the Winter Pairs the aforementioned Berry and Clegg meshed well to amass 39 points but were matched by Steve Rusyn and Jean Van Boeckel.
Following closely just one point behind were Dave Halsall and Peter Main followed by captain Gordon Lucas and Martin Holden.
• STONYHURST Park Golf is holding its annual Corporate Charity Day on Friday, May 11th.
This is the 12th year it has run the event and it has already raised well in access of £80,000 for local charities.
This year’s charities are; Crossroads Care (Ribble Valley branch) who provide support for carers and the people they care for, Mawdesley Equine People’s Trust which provide an experience for disadvantaged children from the Ribble Valley area and the Bowland and Pennine Mountain Rescue Team.
The day consists of teams of four playing 18 holes of golf, bacon butties, lunch, evening dinner at the Shireburn Hotel and prizes for the successful teams are all provided at a cost of £200 per team.
It’s a great way for businesses, large and small, to give reward and recognition to its staff or to use for team building; and all for a great cause.
