Dave closes on the title

It was a great weekend for Mytton Fold Golf Club’s Dave Clegg when he took the win in the Winter Singles.

Not only did he win the day’s competition, but also took half of the Twos Pot which had been built up over the last three weeks!

And to add to his double winning haul is the near certainty of the overall win in the Winter Singles league, as the only potential challenger, Steve Worrall is currently recuperating following a knee operation.

Dave’s 33 points over the shortened 16-hole winter course put him two points clear of second placed Wayne Andrews and three ahead of the irrepressible Jim Bridge.

Dave is now 10 points clear of the aforementioned Steve Worrall and, with just one more round of the Winter Singles to go, it would need a maximum ten from Steve, and a duck for Dave to knock him off the top spot.

The other competitor to share the double-rollover twos pot was Ray Standring who, like Dave Clegg, had a birdie at the first.

Leading lady was Hazel Sellars with Judith Kay second and Pauline White third.

Judith Kay leads the ladies’ Order of Merit from Hazel Sellars and Jean Havard.

The final week of the Winter Pairs matches saw Tony Wilson and Frank Havard take the top score of the day (39 points) and with it the league lead. The pairings of Keith Fitzhenry/Barrie Walmsley and Wayne Ivinson/John Welch both carded 37 points to secure their participation in the finals weekend. These three pairings will be joined by Nick Avino/Martin Holden in a winner-takes-all playoff on Sunday.
