Baz battles through winter frost

editorial image

SATURDAY’S cold and frosty morning brought out the best from Mytton Fold Golf Club’s Baz Hargreaves.

Playing off his winter handicap of 19, a nett 52 was just good enough to beat pie man Nigel Fairhurst into second place by way of a card play-off.

The freezing conditions again required that golf was played over the shortened winter course of just 16 holes, yet this did not deter Langho’s best from turning out in large numbers to contest the Winter Singles and Pairs competitions.

Another of Mytton Fold’s recuperating ‘new-knee’ brigade finished in third spot when Jim Bridge took the final podium position when he finished just one shot behind the leading duo.

This week it was the turn of Mick Walsh who came out on top in the family squabble for golfing honour with son Matt when he finished in fourth spot.

With Steve Rusyn just out of the top ten, and failing to add to his Order of Merit score of 42 points, it was left to club secretary Dave Clegg to take the league’s lead by just two points, with Gary Aldred in third, a further five points behind Steve.

In the ladies’ section it was a first winter singles win for Tarja Wilson coming home with a nett 60. Judith Kay came in second, followed by Order of Merit leader Doreen Hammond in third.

Dave Clegg and Gary Aldred both birdied the par-3 first and Jean Van Boeckel birdied the eleventh to make it a three-way split for the twos pot.

In the Winter Pairs Wayne Ivinson and John Welch were back into winning ways when they returned a very creditable 40 points, two clear of Dave Clegg and John Berry. Pushing them hard were captain Gordon Lucas and Martin Holden with 37 points.
