Hurst Green progressed to the third round of the Syndicate Trust Youth Cup thanks to Oli Shipston’s goal two minutes from the end of extra time.
A fine reflex save from Ben Armer was the main highlight of a scoreless first half in which both teams cancelled each other out.
The second half livened up considerably, however, 15 minutes from time as a speculative 30-yarder arrowed past Armer into the top corner.
Green responded well as they laid siege on Penwortham’s goal, as efforts from Ben Aspery, Tom Jacques and man of the match Tyler Baron flew narrowly wide.
And in the final minute of injury time, Aspery collected the ball 30 yards from goal and dribbled past two defenders before lobbing the keeper.
Against the run of play, clinical finishing by Penwortham’s striker had the Green staring at a 2-1 defeat.
The Green deservedly equalised five minutes from time when Jacques was first to react to a superb penalty save by the Penwortham keeper, and at the death, Shipston stabbed home the winner for the ecstatic Ribble Valley lads.
