READ United snatched a draw from the jaws of defeat at Feniscowles in a game that the Ribble Valley side really should have won.

Matthew Whitwell’s late strike ensured United would take a share of the spoils in a highly entertaining encounter.

On an icy surface, Read showcased a slick passing game to counter the hosts direct style of play.

Feniscowles opened the scoring when a delicious free kick was flicked on to Steve Eddlestone, who buried a fine header at the back post.

United almost made an immediate reply as marauding full back Jordan Neary flashed a shot across goal that the keeper did well to hold.

Richard Wilson then had a goal incorrectly chalked off for off-side, as United started to crank up the pressure.

The away side got their rewards when Duane Knappet showed superb ingenuity on the byline to find Danny Sharples, and the midfielder displayed great composure to wrongfoot the keeper and fire home.

United were then in front as Whitwell picked up the ball 35 yards out, unleashing a tracer-bullet that ripped past the keeper into the middle of the net.

The hosts’ goal led a charmed life after the break as man of the match Whitwell continued a personal assault on the Feniscowles goal, hitting both posts within a 10-minute period that should have seen the visitors out of sight.

United were made to rue these missed chances as Feniscowles equalised, catching the visitors on the break as the winger showed good composure to slot the ball past the keeper.

The hosts completed a sensational turnaround as Read were slow to clear their lines, leaving the Feniscowles front-line with the freedom of the United penalty area allowing the striker to nod home unchallenged.

The visitors showed great resolve, driven on by dynamic duo of Sharples and Andrew Arkwright in midfield, they pushed the hosts back deep into their own territory.

The visitors kept to their passing philosophy, Neary played a one-two with Darren Barrow, feeding the ball into Arkwright who laid a first time ball to Whitwell, who smashed home to give Read a deserved draw.

United travel to BGSOB today, kick-off 2 p.m.

FINAL SCORE: Feniscowles 3, Read United 3
