A HORRIFIC double leg break to Jack Fielding marred Read United’s 3-1 victory over Edenfield.
The referee cut the match short such was the severity of the injury, to leave a bitter-sweet taste in the mouth for United.
On a scrappy pitch, both teams struggled to get on the ball and dictate the play, United talisman Andy Bennett wasting a number of early opportunities.
Edenfield had the chance to draw first blood, Adam Ellis felled by Matthew Whitwell in the area, Ellis dusted himself down to take the kick only for Read stopper Nick Galea to produce a stunning save.
This invigorated United who started the second half like a train, Richard Wilson’s trickery setting up Bennett who fired low past the keeper.
Edenfield pinned the hosts back straight away, a half cleared corner fell to Daniel Fletcher, who expertly volleyed into the roof of the net.
Read rallied, industrious midfielder Thomas Harper ploughed through oncoming challenges, before thundering the ball home.
Darren Barrow’s dominance in the air aided Read’s cause, whilst Fielding’s boundless energy never gave the away side a moments peace.
Kyle O’Connor manoeuvred to find space, only to mishit his effort with the goal gaping. Man of the match Wilson then left defenders flatfooted before flashing wide.
Bennett put the result beyond any doubt, showing the Edenfield centre-half a clean pair of heels, before nonchalantly beating the keeper from the edge of the box.
The game seemed to be petering out until a reckless challenge on 82 minutes left Fielding in agony, bringing a premature halt to proceedings.
Read joint-manager Andy Bennett said: “I’m pleased with the win. But we are more concerned about Jack, and wish him a speedy recovery.”
