Whalley’s Joe Garner was a proud man on Tuesday night as he captained Preston North End in their 1-0 win at Gillingham.

The North End fan took the armband in the absence of Tom Clarke as Simon Grayson’s men earned their sixth-successive victory.

Garner, with eight goals to his name so far this season, after a 24-goal return last term - was twice denied adding to his tally by the woodwork.

But North End took the points with a Paul Huntington strike on the hour mark at the Priestfield Stadium.

At the weekend, Garner was at the centre of a storm after being accused by Port Vale of play-acting at Deepdale after appearing to be jabbed in the face by Stephane Zubar.
