Lady Clarets pile on pressure

The Lady Clarets cut the gap on leaders Bolton Wanderers to one point in the North West Women's Regional League after player of the match Joanna Rohman sealed a 1-0 victory over local rivals Blackburn Community LFC.

The hosts went close early on when Justine Wallace headed Sarah Greenhalgh’s pass towards Rohman who fired a half-volley just wide of the upright.

The title-chasing Lady Clarets went even closer moments later when Wallace struck the crossbar after skipping past a defender.

Rohman almost opened the scoring in the closing stages of the half but her attempted drifted wide of the far post.

In the second half Lizzy Hamer and Rohman combined to tee up Becky Hayton on the edge of the box but the midfielder was denied by goalkeeper Amy Dixon who pushed the shot wide.

Stephanie Meeks then headed wide from a corner before Hamer failed to hit the target from another opening as the home side upped the ante.

As Wallace drilled wide it looked as though the Lady Clarets’ profligacy would prove costly but they eventually found the breakthrough.

Greenhalgh started the move on the edge of her own penalty area and another six players were involved in an incisive move that led to Rohman beating Dixon with a thunderous drive that picked out the bottom corner.

Rather than sitting on their lead the Lady Clarets continued to command the fixture and were unfortunate not to add to their lead.

A free kick located Meeks in a central position in front of goal but Dixon was again on hand to foil the attempt.

Wallace and substitute Georgia Payton both had opportunities to put the game to bed but Dixon denied the former with a superb save while the latter blazed over from an acute angle.
