Two quickfire first half goals were enough for Hurst Green to clinch promotion to the First Division on Saturday, in their debut season in the West Lancashire Football League.
The win means that nearest rivals Leyland United are unable to catch them, and still keeps alive Green’s title hopes.
A fantastic back post header from the outstanding Tom Bartlett gave Green the lead on a testing surface.
Chris Cookson doubled the visitors’ lead as he lashed home a loose ball in the area.
Todmorden were restricted to shots from outside the box as Green’s backline, led superbly by Bartlett, held firm.
Green looked to defend their lead for the remainder of the game, and the home side had a glorious chance to reduce the arrears from a corner, but the chance, from five yards, was scoopedover.
Todmorden also skimmed a post from long range, but Green comfortably saw out the remaining minutes to seal promotion.
Hurst Green travel to Bolton County on Tuesday, May 7th (6-45 p.m.)in what potentially could be a title decider.
