Five star Read too good for Hurst Green

Read United put on a five star performance to sweep aside a strong Hurst Green outfit.

Matthew Whitwell hit an explosive brace to propel his side to victory.

On a terrific surface, United looked to use the width of the pitch stretching the hosts who opted for a narrow system.

Read took an early lead out of nothing when Whitwell struck a 25-yard howitzer that flew into the far corner.

The visitors then struck the woodwork through Matt Hesmondhaulgh as a shell-shocked Green looked to gather their senses.

The home side should then have equalised as Wood headed wide from point blank range.

Whitwell then compounded Green’s misery capitalising on a defensive error smashing home from 12 yards.

With United looking to be out of sight, the hosts made an immediate riposte, Wood’s head meeting a terrific left wing cross to sail into the top corner.

Just before the break Green earned a free kick, as Galea could have seen red for a scything last man tackle. The dead ball was sensationally flashed in off the underside of the bar to level matters.

The visitors took the setback in their stride, effervescent winger Kyle O’Connor raced away down the right, arrowing the ball home as United retook the lead.

Darren Barrow then opportunistically made it four as his cross deceived the keeper and dipped into the top corner of the net.

This served to knock the stuffing out of the hosts, as United began to retain possession to thwart any attempt of a second comeback.

Substitute Richard Wilson added lustre to the result, turning on the afterburners to beat the last defender, followed by cultured left foot finish to seal the points in the dying embers of the match.

Read United travel to Feniscowles today, kick off at 2pm.
