Blues boss Simon Garner admits Tuesday night’s superb win over league leaders Northwich Victoria has set the standard for his players.
The Blues ended the Vics’ 100% start to the season as they earned a 2-0 victory at Shawbridge with goals from Scott Bakkor and Callum Hendry – earning their first clean sheet in the process.
And Garner hopes the performance can be a benchmark as they look to build on their start to the campaign, having climbed to sixth place in the Evo-Stik First Division North table.
Clitheroe are at fourth place Warrington Town on Saturday, before they host seventh place Scarborough Athletic on Tuesday night, and Garner said: “We were fantastic from the first whistle against Northwich, and we have to now try and put a run together.
“We’ve shown what we can do, but we have to do that on a consistent basis and put in performances like that back to back.
“We have a really tough run of games now – Warrington are five unbeaten and Scarborough were one of the favourites before the season started.
“We know the league, anyone can beat anyone, and the lads have to get their heads around that – they have to do it week in, week out.
“We have shown we can beat the top sides – we beat Salford, Darlington and Northwich last season – but, with all due respect to Ossett Town, who beat us 2-1 on Saturday, if we want to break into the top 10 and above, we have to beat sides like that.”
However, Garner will have to make enforced changes at Warrington, with skipper David Lynch suspended and Jimmy Heywood unavailable, and he may look to bolster his squad: “We’re down to the bones – we wouldn’t want to change anything after Tuesday, but we might look to bring someone in.
“We’ll go to Warrington with confidence though, and hopefully we can build on Tuesday night.”
