Clitheroe earned a 2-2 draw against Ashton United at Shawbridge on Saturday as they continued their pre-season schedule.

The Blues, in their new red away kit, twice fell behind to their Evo-Stik Premier Division visitors, but fought back to draw.

Ashton had the first sight of goal as Shelton Payne sent a side-foot effort straight at Chris Thompson, before, after 17 minutes, Payne put United ahead via a deflection from a Liam Brownhill pass.

But Clitheroe levelled when a slack pass from Cavell Coo which allowed Modou Cham to fire home.

Ashton regained the lead after the break when Chris Baguley found substitute Sam McMahon, who found the net after his initial effort was saved.

And McMahon almost added to Ashton’s lead with 15 minutes remaining, only to hit the post from a Scott Metcalfe centre.

The Blues kept plugging away, and got their rewards at the death when Dimitri Tuanzebe latched onto a cross and cut inside a defender before beating the keeper from close range.

Boss Simon Haworth said: “(It was a) real positive performance and result against a good AshtonUnitedside.”

Clitheroe, who beat a Morecambe XI 3-1 at Shawbridge on Wednesday evening, are at Liversedge on Saturday, before their final friendly at home to an AFC Fylde XI on August 6th.
