So, we’ve lost Padiham’s only Co-op store. Granted, we all like to save a few pounds here and there but, as the saying goes, you get what you pay for.
All right, Co-op food stores aren’t the cheapest but the Co-op movement is the most ethical, not withstanding the trouble at the bank of course! A glance at the history of the movement illustrates how much they have and still are improving the lot of the consumer. This is not confined to the food sector.
Then there is the other big food retailers. We pay less at the till: how is it possible? These retailers are driven purely by profit. Therefore, they won’t be as ethical at the point of their supplies and this pattern will be continued throughout the business. That is to say, if they can save a few pounds at the expense of someone’s dignity, they will do and will pass the saving on to the customer in the so-called price war.
So come on folks, patronise the remaining Co-op food stores we have in the area. Use them or lose them. If they all go the other big retailers will remain just as faceless.
