A FEMALE Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) was punched to the ground in an unprovoked attack during The Clitheroe Food Festival.

The officer sustained serious facial injuries and cuts inside her mouth and was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital where she was discharged the same day.

The incident happened at 3-45 p.m. on Saturday. The PCSO was patrolling Castle Street during the food festival celebrations when a 26-year-old man allegedly ran up to her and punched her in the face causing her to fall backwards to the floor.

The offender was immediately arrested by two off-duty police officers who happened to be nearby.

Sgt John Lindsay, of Clitheroe Police, said: “The PSCO was left badly shaken by this incident. It was a completely unprovoked attack and she had never seen or spoken to the man before.”
