MAN of the moment Bradley Wiggins – the first ever British winner of the Tour de France – will be riding Ribble Valley roads next month.
Wiggins, who hopes to follow up his Tour de France victory with Olympic gold, will join local cycling enthusiasts on Sunday August 19th for “Ride with Brad”, a brand new event specially organised to help celebrate the launch of the Bradley Wiggins Foundation.
Starting and finishing in Barnoldswick, the event will take in the stunning Ribble Valley and Forest of Bowland scenery, using roads which Wiggins often uses to train on, from his home in Eccleston, near Chorley.
“Ride with Brad” will comprise two challenging sportive rides in one of the most scenic and low-traffic areas in England. Both routes (160km or 100km) take the riders on a tour of Lancashire’s most outstanding natural beauty spots, ranging from lush Ribble Valley farmland to harssh climbs onto remote open moorland.
The 160km route conquers many challenging climbs and descents that have featured in the Tour of Lancashire, the Tour of Britain and the National Road Race Championships. Renowned climbs such as Waddington Fell, the Trough of Bowland, Nick o’ Pendle and Longridge Fell form the breath-taking backdrop to this challenging route.
The shorter 100km route misses out the northern moorland loop around the Trough of Bowland, but still includes Barley Fell, Waddington Fell, Longridge Fell and the Nick o’ Pendle, a shorter challenge but still with plenty of fantastic scenery and the chance to ride with Brad too.
There will be plenty of opportunities to refuel at Feed Stations along the way and the routes hwill be fully signed and marshalled, with mobile and static mechanics on hand to help should any problem occur. Both routes start and finish at Victory Park in Barnoldswick. Ride with Brad really is an event for the whole family as there will be an Event Village at the Start/Finish line at Victtory Park featuring many of the event sponsors along with plenty of entertainment and displays.
The Bradley Wiggins Foundation aims to promote participation in sport and encourage people to exercise on a regular basis; to support keen and talented athletes from all sports who have the potential of taking their talent to the next level; and to provide equipment or facilities to allow participation in sport as an individual, through clubs, local communities or schools
