Waddington couple Doreen and Douglas Underwood will host a diamond celebration to honour their 60th year of marriage on March 15th.

The couple, who have lived in Waddington all their married lives, first met at the village’s Wesley Methodist Youth club when Douglas was 18 and Doreen was 16. They were married three years later, in 1952, at Waddington Methodist Church and a reception was held at Doreen’s family cafe in the village, after which the couple enjoyed a honeymoon in Blackpool.

The Underwoods went on to run a successful bed and breakfast business just across the road from the family business for over 20 years, bringing up two sons, Keith and Dennis, now aged 56 and 53. The couple now also have three grandsons and a great granddaughter aged five months.

Douglas commented: “I think the secret to our long and happy marriage has been give and take and also the fact that we have always had our own independent interests. We just look after each other.”

The couple, whose hobbies include playing bridge, cards and eating out, will host a celebratory dinner for friends and family at Clitheroe Golf Club, where they are both members.
