The solar system’s two brightest planets put on a spectacular show last night (Tuesday).

Venus and Jupiter, third and fourth brightest celestial bodies, respectively, in the Solar System appeared to hug each other in a rare conjunction event.

It was visible above the western horizon between 10.30pm and 11pm.

Robin Scagell, vice-president of the Society for Popular Astronomy, said before the event: “Many people will wonder what they are seeing – but it’s just a natural coincidence.

“It will be a beautiful sight and everyone will be able to enjoy it.”
