'Pink Panther' burglar leaves footprints in paint at scene of crime

CLITHEROE'S own "Pink Panther" was apprehended after leaving incriminating pink "paw prints" at the scene of his crime.

Even bungling Inspector Clouseau would not have struggled to track down inept burglar Gordon Barry Burgess, who was trapped after leaving pink footprints in paint he had knocked over during a break-in.

Blackburn magistrates heard Burgess (24) was arrested wearing trainers that matched the prints and police also found traces of the pink paint in the tread of his footwear.

Burgess, of Station Road, Clitheroe, admitted burglary at the town's Jimmy Clitheroe's caf and theft of a wall safe, cash, football cards and scratch cards together worth 605. He also admitted a burglary at the Castle Chippy, in Moor Lane, and theft of two charity boxes, cash from a third box and cash from the till. On that occasion he left a fingerprint behind.

He was made subject to community supervision for 18 months, a 12-week curfew between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. and ordered to pay a total of 360 in compensation.

Miss Catherine Allan (prosecuting) said after breaking into the caf Burgess knocked over a tin of pink paint.

"He stood in the paint and left a number of footprints on the floor which police were later able to match to his trainers," said Miss Allan.

He was linked to the chip shop burglary by a fingerprint left on the outer cover of a Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital charity box which he had ripped open to remove cash.
