Fighter pilot ordered to shoot down UFO
INFORMATION contained in previously top-secret files has revealed that two American fighter planes were scrambled with orders to shoot downa UFO in the skies above England.
One pilot is reported as saying he was only seconds away from a rocket bombardment of the object, which gave an erratic radar signal when it was spotted above open countryside in 1957.
Pilot Milton Torres, now is now 77 and lives in Miami, said the object varied from being motionless to achieving speeds of more than 7,600 mph.
After his encounter he was ordered to keep silent, but the story has now come to light with other UFO sightings in government files released from London's National Archives.
The UFO file reveals how Torres took to the air in his F-86 D Sabre jet in calm weather from the Royal Air Force base at Manston, Kent, in May 1957 but as he was about to fire his rockets at the UFO, it disappeared from the radar screen.
While the file contains no official explanation for the incident, other similar encounters were blamed on weather balloons, clouds or other aircraft.
The files are online at www.nationalarchives.gov.uk
