Burnley butcher is a bacon connoisseur

BACON Connoisseurs' Week has been devised as a celebration of quality bacon, and explores the weird and wonderful varieties available today.

Butchers nationwide have been entering the Bacon Connoisseurs' Week Bring Home the Bacon competition to prove they make the best bacon, including Berkins Butchers in Burnley, Lancashire, where Stephen Berkins believes his sweet cure bacon is best with new potato salad.

Keith Fisher, BPEX Master Butcher, said: "Bacon is one of those meats we just assume comes as it is, but we have a long history of curing cuts of pork to produce bacon, and using different ingredients to create something really special. Butchers and bacon producers up and down the country still use many traditional techniques for creating quality bacon, using skills that have been in families for generations. Even though bacon is one of our oldest meats, it is no surprise it remains one of our favourites."

Bacon Connoisseurs' Week 2010 competition finalists and winners will be announced at a an event on March 22nd, which will feature 'Strictly Come Dancing' star and bacon lover Anton Du Beke.

Anton Du Beke said: "I adore bacon and find it's both a great breakfast to set me up before a day full of dance training and for creating a quick pasta supper after a hard day in the studio! I'm really excited to discover the wide selection of different bacon cures out there and taste some new bacon recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks too. Bring on the bacon!"
